Dennis Chinaworks
Recently we were delighted to add ceramics from the exceptionally talented folks at Dennis Chinaworks, based in Somerset. The pottery was established in 1993 and has only grown in reputation since then. The company was founded by Sally and Richard Dennis, who were both already highly regarded in their previous fields. Sally graduated from the Royal College of Art Fashion School and started a design business with Marion Foale which became a leading design house of the 1960’s. She later took her skills and experience into ceramics, becoming partner and design director of the Moorcroft Pottery from 1986 to 1993. Richard is well known for his antique glass and ceramics business, as well as his specialist publishing house. Sally and her son Buchan take the lead on creating the designs for the Dennis collections.
Sally’s inspiration comes from many different sources but the 20th century Arts & Crafts movement is a strong influence. The vessels are thrown and turned on the wheel by Rory Mcleod. Slip-trailing and decoration with glazes, oxides and painted lustres are added by two very talented designers, Vanessa Thompson and Teresa Blackmore. Each pot is the work of just one decorator, who inscribes the base with their monogram and an edition number.
In contrast, Buchan’s designs are more contemporary. They feature very clean, sinuous forms with exceptionally fine hand-painted decoration. Together, Sally & Buchan introduce new designs each year in a mix of limited editions for galleries and special commissions. Their work can be found in just a select few galleries in the UK and overseas. We are proud to now be amongst them and you can browse our wide range of Dennis Chinaworks ceramics in the gallery and in our online shop.
