Rae George
Rae George’s floral compositions have symbolism as their central role. Repeated motifs, such as paired roses, function as quiet emblems of intimacy. Her oil paintings play with themes of motherhood, partnership, and lived relational experience within a historically loaded genre. They seek to reposition still life away from its decorative tradition towards a metaphor for relationships and emotional connection.
Rae’s practice honours historical methods while expressing a distinctly modern voice. Her art is developing as she moves to larger scale work and prepares for practice-led doctoral research. This research will further examine the relationship between symbolism, gendered art histories, and contemporary experience
Rae George is based in York, is an MA graduate and has exhibited nationally. Her practice draws on 17th-century Dutch painting, combining historical technique with expressive abstraction and contemporary use of colour & oil painting. Rae is also a published author and teaches life drawing alongside her studio work as well as being a visiting lecturer in higher education.
