Located in Ambleside, the Lake District
Whether you arrive by car, bus, boat or on foot we’re easy to reach. The Old Courthouse Gallery is located right in the centre of Ambleside. If you’re exploring the shopping and cafes of the town, you will find us on Market Place, opposite the Ambleside Inn.
If you’re just visiting us, you might want to try the free 1-hour on-street parking spaces right behind the gallery but beware, there are only 4 of them! If you’re in Ambleside for longer, the main car parks are just a 5-10 minute walk away and buses stop outside the nearby Salutation Hotel. If you arrive with Windermere Lake Cruises at Waterhead it’s about a 20 minute walk into town – but there is usually an electric tram shuttle that will get you here faster.
As we are in a very old building, access is not as easy as we would like. There is step-free access to the main door but part of the ground floor and the upstairs areas are unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. We are always happy to help as far as possible with access, and we have a tablet that we use to browse our full collections with visitors who cannot go upstairs.
Well behaved dogs are welcome, but if it’s a typically wet Lakeland day when you visit it may be best if they wait outside, as some of our art and furniture is susceptible to damage from soggy doggies!
