Virginia Dowe creates a range of quality ‘one off’ hand built sculptural ceramics. Skillfully manipulating both extruded and slab forms, she is able to visualise and create imaginative animal studies. Virginia’s passionate and lively approach observes well the attitudes of these creatures. Their character is captured with a sense of fun and directness.
Her work employs earth-stone hand building material, mixed with varying consistencies of grog. This is then fired to 1160C in an electric kiln. A well practiced method of smoke firing is then used which provides the finished pieces with a very natural and unrefined aesthetic appeal.
Virginia Dowe has been sculpting her ceramic dogs since graduating from Wolverhampton University in 1997. In 2022 she relocated from Warwickshire to Suffolk where she combines family life and ceramics
