Deepdale Design
This beautiful range of drawing implements has been created by Stephen Hughes of Deepdale Design. Stephen has a lifelong career in design, most recently working on prosthetic limbs for amputees and specialist seating for children with physical disabilities.
His creation of the Artist series was a personal challenge, aiming to reinvent the humble pencil in a form that was ergonomically perfect for art. Starting with the Artist Pencil, the range has grown to include the Artist Writer pen, the Artist Technical Pencil and the Artist Dip Pen. Each piece is hand-crafted from a mix of interesting and unusual woods and can be refilled for a lifetime of creative use. Each comes with a felt case, and a range of stands is available for purchase too.
Stephen Hughes, Deepdale Design: “The challenge I set myself was to design and make an all wood pencil holder. It had to be practical in terms of holding and adjusting the lead. It had to be light and evenly balanced. It also had to be a beautiful tool in its own right. In fact, musical instruments influenced some of the thought process. From the craftsmanship of the Luthier, to the beautiful timber used, a well crafted instrument allows the musician to express their creativity to the full. I felt an Artist could benefit from a similarly considered and crafted ‘mark maker’. So, that was the goal, a beautiful mark making instrument crafted from timber only. A simple device that allows for maximum feel and user satisfaction, not to mention being eco friendly.”
