Seatree Argyll
Chris and Michaela are a husband and wife team who work together under the name ‘Seatree Argyll’ to produce ceramic artworks, incorporating original poetry.
Based in Argyll, their work reflects the colours and context of their beautiful west of Scotland location. Chris writes the poetry, often exploring spirituality, earth connectedness and our shared humanity. Their pots, sculptures and ceramic artworks then become a three dimensional canvas for the words, but also for marks and glazed surfaces.
Chris has a background in mental health services as a social worker, therapist and manager. Michaela previously worked as a counsellor and ran community services. Neither has formal art or ceramic training, learning by years of trial and error and through the generosity of the wider pottery community.
Seatree Argyll pieces are all hand built from stoneware and raku clays, using slabs or coils. Michaela applies the words, using individual letter stamps, and then the piece will have (at least) two firings in their electric and raku kilns. Raku is a process by which pots are taken out of the kiln red hot, then cooled in a sealed bin with combustible material in order to exclude oxygen, which gives amazing lustres and crackle effects.
